Why I started a Design Blog
It's a big jump to go from "Why would I ever do that?" to "I'm super excited to do this!" but that's where we are.
For the longest time, it never remotely entered my mind that I should start a blog about design. But over the last couple of years, as I was reading blogs by other designers, I thought “If they didn’t write this, where would I have found this information?” I was incredibly grateful for their efforts. Then imposter syndrome hit and I thought “But surely I don’t know anything worth sharing, right? Anything I know, other people already know. Right…?”
That’s when it hit me that — no, not everyone knows everything I know. Not because I’m a genius, not because I have some experience no one has ever had before, but because people come across information in life differently. Sometimes someone encounters a problem and shares a solution. Some people hear about it, some don’t. Someone else comes up against the same problem, and they also share a solution. Different people hear about it, different people don’t. And so it goes. The part that made me want to start a blog is that if everyone thought “Someone else already shared a solution for this” (like I did) then only a small portion of people would ever be exposed to the information.
Throughout human history, we’ve been sharing much of the same information over and over again. Everything can’t reach everyone. Even things I took for granted as universal truths turned out to be localized. Not everyone around the world knows who Mickey Mouse is, but I grew up in North Florida where that was impossible to fathom. So we keep sharing information. The more varied the sources, the wider information can spread.
I’m excited to be a new source of information based on my experiences, research, and resources. Let’s go!
